2023 UMA BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTIONS AND CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

2023 UMA BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTIONS AND CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

ANNOUNCEMENT OF 2023 UMA BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTIONS AND CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

Directors serving on the Upper Mississippi Academy (UMA) Board are elected by our community; eligible voters are all parents and legal guardians of current UMA students, all current UMA Board members, and all current employees of UMA. Elections will take place on May 10, 2022.  Voting will be held in person on the UMA campus and electronically from 8:00 am – 7:00 pm. A paper ballot will be available in the UMA School office on board election day. Please choose a single method to submit your ballot.

The UMA Board is composed of nine members representing three categories:

Category 1) Licensed teacher currently employed as a teacher by the school

Category 2) Parent or legal guardian of a currently enrolled student at the school

Category 3) Community members not otherwise affiliated with the school.

Board terms are generally three years unless a Board member resigns their position early due to life changes, e.g. they are no longer a parent of a UMA student.

Board service is both challenging and rewarding and an excellent way to give back to your community.

There are three positions up for election for the fiscal year beginning in July 2022:

  • one teacher positions ( 3-year term)
  • one parent position (3-year term)
  • one community member position (3-year term).

If you think you might be interested in serving the school as a board member, please read the information below.

The Board is responsible for critical activities for the school including:

  • Financial and compliance oversight;
  • Developing, setting and reviewing school policies
  • Overseeing the school’s mission and goals;
  • Collaboration with and evaluation of the Executive Director.

UMA Board members are expected to attend monthly board meetings, and to be active on one or more permanent or ad-hoc committees. Occasionally, UMA Board members represent the Board at special events within the school and broader community.

Within one year, all new board members are required to complete training in three areas: School Governance, Employment Practices and Financial Management. These training courses are widely available and can be taken individually or as a group. Returning members are required to participate in yearly Board development opportunities. Board members are required to clear a background check.
