“Be tough, yet gentle, humble, yet bold, swayed always by beauty and truth.” (Bob Pieh) is a motto that inspires Sandy as a life-long learner. Sometimes she has learned from formal classes and mostly from hands-on problem solving, mentors, and independent reading/research.

She has worked in several aspects of education:

  • Charter school teaching physical education, math, science, special ed, and a “GLBTQA+ Safe Space” class
  • Instructed year-round at the Voyageur Outward Bound School in Ely, MN
  • ASL/English interpreter and Vocational Evaluator in the Program for Deaf students at Saint Paul College
  • Developed (mostly medical) educational software.

Sandy is a nationally certified Paramedic, part of a CERT team, treasurer and volunteer with her church community, and apheresis donor. She loves building in many forms. In addition to building a cedar-strip canoe in her garage, Sandy sews, knits, gardens, and is learning amateur “ham” radio. She has been part of building two log cabins and has canoed more miles than most people have ridden a bike.

If Sandy could choose a superpower, it would be “Do overs” so there would be an immediate opportunity to use what was learned.
