Visual Arts

Mickey (Ms. J.) is starting her 20th year of teaching and her third here at UMA. She grew up just south of the Twin Cities and her dad was an art teacher. Her 5 brothers and sisters learned very early on how to be creative with little resources, and even today Mickey loves using recycled materials in her own work. She loves to create all kinds of art, but her favorites are ceramics and pottery and jewelry making.

Mickey and her daughter, Zoë (who will be a 9th grader at UMA) LOVE to travel and have visited 17 countries around the world. Their 2 favorite trips have been to Ramabanta, Lesotho and Sintra, Portugal. They also love to spend time outside riding bikes, being close to water, camping, and hiking. Their friends and family are also very important, and they spend as much time with them as they can.

Ms. J. teaches 6th, 7th and 8th-grade art classes. She loves the variety of exciting daily adventures that happen at UMA. The relationships that she has created with the staff and families are the best part of her job. She is looking forward to another successful year filling the UMA hallways with YOUR amazing artwork.

Ms. J.'s profile picture was taken at Thaba Bosiu Mountain - Lesotho, Africa - Summer of 2016.
